Psalm 23

The Lord Is My Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

The Lord is my Shepherd. God is watching over me. He knows when I walk in darkness and when I’m at peace. Even when I am anxious, not sleeping well, and fearful He is with me. How can I be sure of this? Because He has claimed me as His own. I was united with Him in baptism. My sins are forgiven and I will live with Him forever when He returns because I am His own. He bought me with His blood and I have nothing to fear.

I still live in this sin-filled world. I will still fear, doubt, and rage. But I can look to Jesus and His work on the cross and know that this world is not all there is, even though I can’t see what lies ahead.
