Psalm 46

God Is Our Fortress

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song.

46 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

This world is a turbulent place. We hear of wars and rumors of wars. We see sin and corruption and witness it playing out in countless acts of violence and terror among the peoples. We weep and groan and cry out, “how long, O Lord?” As the cruelties and sufferings of this world continue to pile up and weigh down our bodies and minds, we cannot help but feel hopeless and lost. 9-11 crossBut in the midst of the rubble and fallout we find the cross of Jesus Christ. In the midst of pain, suffering, and sin we find one who also endured pain and suffering but knew no sin. Through His own horror we find our peace with God. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection God makes wars cease.

God is our refuge. Through the pain and suffering we can cling to the cross and find our peace. The Lord of hosts is with us and will bring us through the sufferings of this life to eternal peace and rest in the life of the world to come.
